3Ds Max vs Blender: Which Software Is Better?

Choosing between 3Ds Max and Blender Software can be a tough decision since they are both similar and perform similar functions.  However, having a clear understanding of both and how they work can and your decision on which software to choose either 3Ds Max or Blender. Autodesk is the owner of the design program 3ds Max. There is a cost associated with it because experts use it to create designs and items for the commercial market. However, some independent designers choose to spend the money because of the quality it provides. It's only compatible with Windows, and the Autodesk App Store is where you can find add-ons.

Although Blender is a 3D modelling program as well, it's free and open-source, which makes it popular with beginners and amateurs. It is compatible with Windows, Mac, and Linux, and users may make their add-ons or purchase pre-made ones from Blender Market.

3Ds Max Software

The full range of options and features, including those for creation, modification, rendering, and animation, are located in the menu bar at the top of the window for 3ds Max. The toolbar is located underneath the menu and contains the most popular 3Ds Max tools, including undo, redo, and transform. Additionally, the windows menu is included, through which you may access many 3ds Max features like "Material editor" and "Render setup."

In the modelling ribbon on the left, you’ll see the necessary tools for polygon modelling. (It's collapsable but if you expand it, you can see all the tools.) On the Modify panel on the right, you can alter the parameters of the operation you will make. The viewport is where you'll be doing your modelling and where you can visualize it.   • Shading: 3Ds Max uses an exclusive programming language called OSL (Open Shading Language) to add shadow via their OSL Map tool. It is a graphical environment to place and set up the shadow's behaviours. You can make your shadow maps, use prefabs, or download existing ones from the internet.
  • Material Editing: You can create and edit materials, as well as use default ones. A material defines how an object reflects and refracts light, so it can greatly impact the appearance of your creation.
  • Simulation: Fluids such as water, fire, oil, lava, and even groups of objects, like balls in a ball pit, can be simulated. The software gives them physical properties like mass, speed, and direction so that they interact with other objects in the environment in a way that makes sense.
  • Rendering: The rendering engine of 3ds max is called Arnold. It uses GPU rendering, which makes it fast, but it also means you need a good computer with a graphics card. There's a preview option to see the rendered result in a separate window, avoiding the need to reload every time. 
  • Modelling: The modelling workspace has many menus to add objects and transform them. Similar to 3ds Max, it has the scale function (hotkey S) and the extrude function (hotkey E), which lets you easily extrude faces. However, these don't work to extrude cuts: for that, you need to use modifiers. Adjusting objects in Blender is based on modifiers, which change the geometry of an object, merge it with another object, increase the number of elements in the mesh, and so on.
  • UV Unwrapping: This allows you to unwrap your object mesh into a plane so you can create textures specific to the model and ensure an adequate fit.

Eevee is a great engine that added a lot to what you can do rendering in Blender like bridging the gap between offline and real-time rendering. With the blender software, you can pre-visualize cycles of shading with great accuracy in real-time in the viewport and significantly speed up the shading and texturing process.
