What Is the Difference Between CCNA and CCNP?

What is CCNA? It is Cisco's associate-level certification. It proves you know the basics of networking. CCNP is Cisco's professional-level certification. It proves you can build, run and fix larger business networks. Think of CCNA as learning to drive, and CCNP as driving a heavy truck in heavy traffic.

Cisco offers several CCNP tracks. In this guide, we compare CCNA with CCNP Enterprise, because it builds directly on CCNA topics such as routing, switching and security.

Differences between CCNA and CCNP

Feature CCNA
CCNP Enterprise
Level Associate (foundation) Professional
Exams One exam: 200-301
Two exams: 350-401 ENCOR core plus one concentration
Exam length 120 minutes
120 minutes for the core, around 90 for a concentration
Total exam fee $300 $700
Formal prerequisites None None
Best for Beginners, IT support staff, graduates
Network engineers with hands-on experience
Validity 3 years 3 years

Is CCNA or CCNP Better for Beginners?

CCNA is better for beginners. It starts from the basics, and it needs only one exam. Cisco sets no formal entry rules. It does recommend about a year of hands-on experience with Cisco solutions, but that is advice, not a gate.

CCNA suits IT graduates, help desk staff, system administrators and career changers. If you can build a small network in a lab, you can start. Here is your guide on how to become a Cisco Certified Network Associate.

CCNP suits people who already work with routers, switches and firewalls. Reading about a network fault is one thing. Fixing it during a live outage is another. CCNP expects that second skill.

Can I Take CCNP Without CCNA?

Yes. Cisco lists no formal prerequisites for CCNP Enterprise, so CCNA is not compulsory. However, the foundation matters. CCNP assumes you already understand CCNA topics.

Here is one example. CCNA teaches single-area OSPF (Open Shortest Path First), a basic routing method. The CCNP core exam moves on to multi-area OSPF, BGP and policy-based routing. Without CCNA-level knowledge, that jump feels steep.

The two also work well together. Passing a higher-level Cisco exam, such as a CCNP concentration, renews your CCNA. A structured Cisco Networking Training programme helps you close the gap before you step up.

How Do the CCNA and CCNP Exams Differ?

CCNA has one exam, and CCNP has two. The CCNA exam is 200-301. It lasts 120 minutes and mixes multiple-choice, drag-and-drop and hands-on simulation questions. For CCNP Enterprise, you sit the 350-401 ENCOR core exam (120 minutes) and one concentration exam of your choice.

Concentration choices include ENARSI (advanced routing), ENSDWI (SD-WAN), ENSLD (enterprise design), ENWLSD and ENWLSI (wireless) and ENAUTO (automation). That choice is how CCNP lets you specialise.

CCNA Exam vs CCNP Exam

Skill area CCNA covers
CCNP Enterprise goes deeper
Routing Static routes, single-area OSPF
Multi-area OSPF, EIGRP, eBGP, policy-based routing
Switching VLANs, trunking, EtherChannel, spanning tree
Layer 2 troubleshooting and high availability
Security ACLs, port security, AAA, WPA2 and WPA3
Control plane policing, TrustSec, MACsec, firewalls
Automation REST APIs, JSON, Ansible basics
Python reading, YANG, NETCONF, RESTCONF, EEM applets
Modern design Basic wireless and controllers
SD-WAN, SD-Access, VRF, LISP, VXLAN
Monitoring Syslog, SNMP, NTP
NetFlow, SPAN, IP SLA, Catalyst Center

In the ENCOR exam, infrastructure is the biggest topic at 30%, followed by security at 20%.

Which Is Harder, CCNA or CCNP?

CCNP is harder. It goes deeper, needs two exams and expects real work experience. CCNA is broad but gentle, because it tests many topics at a basic level. CCNP tests fewer areas, but far more deeply.

Study time reflects this. A common CCNA plan runs for 12 weeks at two to three hours a day. CCNP preparation usually takes longer, as the topics are heavier.

Both exams reward hands-on practice. Use Cisco Packet Tracer, a free simulator, for CCNA. Use Cisco Modeling Labs, which runs real Cisco software images, for CCNP. Cisco does not publish pass marks for either exam, so learn every domain well instead of gambling on your strong areas. Focused CCNA Exam Preparation keeps those 12 weeks on track.

How Much Do the CCNA and CCNP Exams Cost?

CCNA costs $300. CCNP Enterprise costs $700 in total: $400 for the core exam and $300 for the concentration exam. Local taxes are extra.

CCNA and CCNP Exam Costs

Exam Fee (USD) Notes
CCNA 200-301 $300
One exam, 120 minutes. Fee stays the same for v2.0 from 2027
CCNP core (350-401 ENCOR) $400 120 minutes
CCNP concentration (one exam) $300
Shorter exam, around 90 minutes
CCNP Enterprise total $700 Two exams

Cisco prices in US dollars. Your card converts the fee into dirhams, pounds or euros, and VAT or other taxes may apply. Check the final price on Pearson VUE before you pay. You can also use Cisco Learning Credits, and some employers pay for exams. Remember to add training, lab and practice-test costs to your budget. Check this guide on how to get certified and placed as a Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP).

What Is Changing in CCNA v2.0, and Does It Affect My Choice?

Yes, a little. CCNA v2.0 goes live on 3 February 2027. The current v1.1 exam stays available until 2 February 2027. Cisco is cutting six domains to five and adding a 10% domain on AI in network operations. The fee and the 120-minute length stay the same.

Passing either version earns the same CCNA. If you can be exam-ready before the cut-off, v1.1 is a fine choice. If not, prepare for v2.0, which leans harder on troubleshooting.

What is Changing in CCNA v1.1 to CCNA v2.0

CCNA v1.1 domain (until 2 Feb 2027) Weight CCNA v2.0 domain (from 3 Feb 2027) Weight
Network Fundamentals 20% Network Infrastructure and Connectivity 25%
Network Access 20% Switching and Network Access 25%
IP Connectivity 25% IP Routing 20%
IP Services and Security Fundamentals 10% + 15% Network Services and Security 20%
Automation and Programmability 10% AI and Network Operations and Management 10%

How Do CCNA and CCNP Careers Compare in the UK, Europe and the USA?

The pattern is the same in every market. CCNA opens entry doors, and CCNP supports step-ups. One 2027 guide notes that CCNA is the credential most often named in adverts for network technician, NOC analyst and junior network engineer roles. Pay differs by country, and no source splits it cleanly by certificate.

CCNA and CCNP Careers Comparison in the UK, USA & Europe

Market What current data shows What to do
UAE Role averages run from AED 4,457 to AED 9,773 a month
Compare Dubai adverts with Indeed UAE
UK Indeed UK employer pages show network engineer averages from under £30,000 to over £70,000 a year
Check adverts for your region and seniority
Europe No single Europe-wide figure. Cisco exams are in English or Japanese, at Pearson VUE centres or online
Check local job boards and plan English-language study
USA BLS median for network and computer systems administrators is $99,130 a year (May 2025 data)
Treat it as a role-level benchmark

Sources: UK Pay→ Indeed UK employer salary pages, for example, Moneycorp and Fujitsu; USA pay→ BLS OEWS data, May 2025, as reported by Wagedex

The lesson is simple. Look at real job adverts in your city, then check which certificates they name.
